Koolfog’s 2021 Seasonal Guide for Installation & Maintenance of Outdoor Misting Systems

This past year has been a whirlwind experience for everyone. Whether you stayed at home or ventured out for a bit of outdoor fun and food, thisoutdoor misting system palm desert pandemic crisis has taken us all for a ride. The ups and downs of closures and openings have affected everyone. Koolfog pivoted its resources to help as many clients and new customers as we could during last summer’s surge. While implementing CDC and OSHA guidelines to keep our employees and customers safe, we ran multiple crews to meet increasing outdoor misting system needs… and, it was barely enough. Our experienced and amazing team had a challenging time keeping up with the demand. We persevered as this testimonial from LG’s Steakhouse in La Quinta demonstrates. We’ve taken tremendous strides in addressing Koolfog response times and while we are hopeful about new vaccines and a return to “normal”, we anticipate more ups and downs before we can truly say that the COVID-19 is done for good. We are planning ahead and have implemented a seasonal strategy to help our outdoor misting system customers navigate what to expect.

Winter
Let’s begin with Winter expectations as we are in this season currently. Now is, actually, a great time to think about installing your outdoor misting system. If you think this is something you want in place for the onset of summer’s heat, you should definitely schedule a FREE estimate (link to contact) as soon as possible. We know this doesn’t seem like a priority and the weather isn’t necessarily suited for outside entertainment, however, planning ahead can set you up so you can get ahead of the spring rush.

Spring
With pandemic repercussions continuing to concern, Koolfog expects its own surge as the first signs of warmth begin to draw folks outside. Businesses will be looking at ramping up their service and space requirements and residents will be realizing how they wish to spend their time at home while riding things out. Our estimators and design team will be at the ready just as our field technicians begin our Spring Start-up Services.

For those businesses and homeowners with an existing outdoor misting system, now’s the time to bring them out of their winter hibernation. During a routine service call, our techs will:

• Reconnect your dormant mister system to its main power and water supply
• Inspect the system and nozzle integrity
• Replace misting nozzles that are not performing
• Perform an active run-thru to ensure that the system is misting the area optimally

Performing general maintenance on your outdoor misting system during spring is important because it extends the life of your misters and ensures that everything is fully functional when summer’s sizzling temperatures climb. To schedule a service call or if you require technical support, you can connect with our team here.

Summer
Summer at Koolfog is fast and furious and we have all cylinders firing! From our administrative support team to our local installers, everyone is going non-stop. This is our peak season when the weather is hot and folks want their outdoor misting systems working yesterday. In addition to our local clients, we also design and engineer high-pressure evaporative cooling and fogging solutions for greenhouses, theme parks, dust control, landscape water features and special effects. Every one of our clients deserves our utmost attention so we dedicate teams to the local market to meet all of your needs as quickly as possible so you can enjoy your outdoor time.

Fall
When it begins to cool down, most use their outdoor misting system less in anticipation of moving to indoor activities. Misting system maintenance and Koolfog’s Fall Shut-down & Maintenance service protects your misting system during the winter months when your system is inactive. Although you may be in an area where the days are still reasonably warm, just one night at low or freezing temperature can create cracks, bursts or leaks in your misting system’s pipes and components. Even without freezing, water sitting in the pipes can become stagnant and should be emptied when you aren’t using your misting system for a long time. Our Fall Shut-down & Maintenance service include these steps:

  • Run system to monitor operation
  • Disconnect the water supply
  • Perform multi-point inspection
  • Complete minor repairs and/or schedule for more extensive repairs
  • Air purge lines using compressed air
  • Replace water filters with dry & canister o-rings with new, for quick start-up in the Spring.
  • Change pump oil

Disconnect water/power and tag as winterized
Our team hopes that Koolfog’s 2021 Seasonal Guide for Installation & Maintenance of Outdoor Misting Systems will help you make your planning and decision making a little easier. We are here to assist you all year long. You can contact us for a FREE estimate or schedule a service appointment anytime! Click here to contact us.

outdoor patio misting system

According to Daniel Phelps, General Manager and a member of the LG family legacy, “Due to Covid-19, we have focused our reopening efforts on creating a comfortable patio environment and I would say that installing Koolfog’s misting system has been imperative to maintaining our business operations.  Our patio business has more than tripled and with repeat customers, we have the confidence that we can offer an optimal dining experience.“

Dining Under the Misters, we recommend this fan-favorite:

LG’s signature 30 oz. PRIME Bone-In Rib Eye paired with Rodney Strong Reserve Cabernet

Similar to its Palm Springs location, LG’s La Quinta patio has come to life with an open and airy atmosphere to match its sophisticated charm.   Shade umbrella’s and a robust outdoor patio misting system welcome guests al fresco to ensure a fresh culinary adventure.   Phelps says he is more than happy with the results attributed to Koolfog’s misting system.  “Koolfog has been fantastic.  They were responsive, very personable, and did a clean installation job.  The misting system coverage is phenomenal and serves every purpose we need them for.  We’ve had compliments from guests about how cool the terrace is despite our raging desert heat…in fact, I think our outdoor dining experience is pretty special right now.”

As family-owned and operated restaurants, LG’s La Quinta continues its impeccable reputation and is pleased to offer its full menu 5 pm-10 pm daily including its PRIME beef selections and award-winning wine list.  LG’s Prime Steakhouse has restaurants in Palm Springs and La Quinta. Located at the corner of one of the busiest intersections in the Coachella Valley, La Quinta’s LG’s Prime Steakhouse sits on the southeast corner of Highway 111 and Washington Street.  Please phone 760-771-9911 for inquiries and reservations.

Coachella Valley Special Event Cooling Solutions

Koolfog Planning and Event Specialists work with customers to provide the best temporary cooling solutions for parties, festivals, and special occasions.  We provide cooling solutions for outdoor spaces at private residences, restaurants, hotels, country clubs, large festival grounds, golf courses, concert venues, street fairs and the like. There are many facets to planning both large and small events including number of guest, traffic flow, menu selection, entertainment, safety concerns, etc. It is our goal for t our clients understand how things work and what they can expect to make for the smooth programming of their event.  If our team is not familiar with a particular venue, our special events team may request to review a location layout, design schemas or do an on-site visit to consult on a variety of misting solutions.

Koolfog misting solutions use high-pressure pump systems to emit a dry “fog” that evaporates without leaving an area wet.  However, the outside temperature and ambient humidity can be a factor in the optimum use of misting applications.  The tiny atomized droplets that are released from our mist and fog nozzles can cling to moisture in the atmosphere so the dry desert heat found in the Coachella Valley most of the year is a great setting to use misters.

Our portable evaporative misting fans are easy to use and provide approximately 20-30 square feet of atomized water vapor to beat the heat.  They can be placed in different spots around the perimeter of the action or placed in a pod to create a type of 360 degree cooling station. These fans do require connection to a hose from a potable water source.  Finding a safe drinking water source is extremely important as the fans release tiny droplets of water into the air  that can be inhaled and using recycled or compromised water that may cause illness. A power source must also be found to plug in each fan.  Our tech team will deliver the fans to your venue to set up with Koolfog hoses and extension cords.  As the fans are moveable, it is important to make sure any cords and hoses are not exposed.  A spaghetti web of hoses and electrical cords can be a safety issue and cause injury to a guest that might trip over them.  If water and power sources are not easily accessible or located near the heart of your party, we suggest you use some type of resource to tape them down, use cable grips, or cover any loose parts completely so that everyone remains safe.  Our team will also walk our clients through the operating procedures for the portable misting fans.  As these are commercial use products, we suggest that the fans are set back from any sound systems.  While our misting fans may be noisy…guests usually don’t complain as they can find a bit of respite from sizzling temperatures.

Event Misting Fan

Our tech team is also available to install temporary custom cooling solutions for tents, cabanas, shade structures, patios, and loggias. A temporary misting install provides a slightly different vibe than our Koolfog fans which can be placed at satellite locations.  Custom temporary misters are not mobile and do not oscillate.  However, this installation option can cool a greater area and when installed properly, a gazebo or vendor tent with our misters can create a cooling barrier or curtain of mist that really works well to knock out the heat. Misting lines can be attached to a structure in many different ways including a custom wrap, by zip ties, or support suspension line.   We also have misting rings that can be attached to columns and trees to add to the ambiance.   Misters and misting fans not only provide cooling, they also create awesome visual effects that can add to overall feel of the festivities.  Please don’t hesitate to call our office at 760-321-9203 for more information on how Koolfog misting fans and temporary misters can enhance your next event.

Patio Misters at “The Nest”

The Coachella Valley has long been a resort destination attracting those sun seekers drawn to fine weather and amenities during colder Winter months. As Summer’s blistering heat fades, the desert comes alive and just as birds fly South for Winter, the “Snowbirds” arrive.  Snowbirds is an, aptly applied, endearing term referring to visitors that return to the desert each year to celebrate a new season of camaraderie and the best of California desert lifestyle.

Since 1965, Snowbirds and locals alike have flocked to The Nest to reminisce, make new memories and have a great time. Located in the heart of Indian Wells, The Nest has become a gathering place to come together for a fond welcome, amazing food, entertainment, and old-fashioned hospitality.  The Nest serves up colorful cocktails and a masterful menu set to a lively scene in a warm and inviting atmosphere.  Not just for dining and private banquets, the venue is a destination for live entertainment, dancing, and revelry.  Earning its reputation as hot spot to be and be seen, The Nest mixes vintage charm with sophisticated tastes to please a crowd.

It is not uncommon during evenings to see a line of eager guests waiting outside the restaurant and bar ready to enter this exciting venue. Tempting guests with its festive vibe and what is known to be a great time, The Nest can be seen from Highway 111 with passersby intrigued by the haze of the patio misters.

Koolfog patio misters help restaurants keep guests comfortable while they eat by combating heat while adding to the overall ambiance.  People that wish to enjoy their meal on the terrace can enjoy the fresh air and enjoy an outdoor dining experience.  The Nest recently renovated their patio area with a new shade structure…the perfect place for a Koolfog patio misting system.  Misting line was installed around the perimeter of the structure with a new Gibson series misting pump discreetly set upon the roof.  The misting pump comes with a wireless key fob remote module to make turning the misters on and off easily.

Dine under the misters with your choice of menus:  The Nest Menu, Early Bird Menu, Happy Hour Menu, Wine Menu, Summer Specials Menu and a Gluten Free Menu!

Park Misting Systems Coachella Valley

Recently a good friend asked our Koolfog Customer Service Team what Coachella Valley public parks have park misting systems to keep kids and critters cool.  Our team not only admires great work found amongst our misting industry community, we provide new misting system installation, repair and service to existing misters, take care of fogscapes across our local desert cities. So we thought we’d share a few of our favorite finds.

Freedom Park, Palm Desert

Freedom Park offers 26 acres of outdoor fun.  Designed with a ode to American History, this expansive park welcomes its visitors with a ton of amenities to indulge in sports activities, picnicking, and play.  Like baseball? Softball? Soccer? or football? The fields await. Enjoy a game on the court? Try basketball, pickleball or volleyball.  Take a walk on the path that winds around the park or take advantage of some of the areas skate features and don’t forget to pack a basket of snacks to share under the shaded picnic shelters. There truly is something for everyone…including our furry family friends.   Freedom Park has a very popular dog park boasting a green grassy area with trees to give your dog an amazing outdoor experience.  It’s been reported that there are even “baggies, scoops, balls, water bowls, and rinsing station” to pamper your pets. Of course, we are partial to the playground area at Freedom Park.  There are kids jungle gyms, climbers, slides, swings and so much more to explore! In the middle of the park there is a very cool immersive play structure in the form of a ship.  Children can use their imagination to champion the large vessel on a sea of calm waves with a lovely plume of mist gently moving through the air.   The fog fountain is comprised of a set of misting pads that are set into the ground at the front of the ship to create a sense of movement while providing a real visual and tactile experience.

Fountain of Life, Cathedral City

As you leave Palm Springs via Highway 111, you can’t help but know you’ve arrived at the heart of Cathedral City when you spot the spectacular “Fountain of Life”.  While not, technically, a park misting system, this beautiful piece of public art definitely gives off a mist sensation and has become a wonderful gathering place to cool off and chill. Inspired by the nature and history of the desert the large stone and mosaic fountain incorporates symbols of the areas birth and growth while surrounded by sculptures of creatures found in the Coachella Valley such as turtles, fish, wildflowers, and big horn sheep.  The artwork is colorful and tells a vibrant story of Cathedral City’s roots.  Families can been seen hanging out under the waterfalls, climbing amidst the multi-level tiers or playing in the water sprays that form lovely mist clouds around the soft surface.  According to www.cathedralcity.gov, the The “Fountain of Life” ‘s “underground tank contains two 5.5 h.p. pumps with a capacity of 450 g.p.m. The pumps process the water through a manifold for distribution among nozzles for 32 separate fountain features. Each nozzle is adjusted for quantity and pressure, which affect the height of the sprays.”  The fountain has become the centerpiece for area civic activities, shopping, and dining as well as a local  fan favorite for beating the heat.

Civic Center Park, Palm Desert

Perhaps one of the most beloved parks in the Coachella Valley, Civic Center Park, Palm Desert is a picturesque destination to celebrate nature as well as exercise the body and soul.  The 70 acre park is one of the largest in the area with duck filled ponds, artfully arranged walking paths, public art pieces for reflection and contemplation, and a rose garden to breathe in the fragrance of floral beauty.  Large palm trees dot the landscape and surround a large grassy knoll with a huge amphitheatre that hosts concerts and special events.  In addition to the many sports fields and courts, the park is home to Palm Desert Parks and Recreation facilities Community Center, Aquatic Center, and YMCA.  The adjacent Skate Park and Dog Park are situated across from the College of the Desert and accessible to the public.  The Dog Park features a grass area with two seating ramadas for dog owners to relax and take shade.   The ramadas have park misting systems and make for a great respite from the heat.  Misting systems can also be found on the Picnic Pavilions located near the children’s playgrounds.   We think Civic Center Park in Palm Desert is a special place to put on your “must visit” list.

Restaurant Misters & Spritzers at Kitchen 86

Recently, our Koolfog Taste Team found itself checking out the local scene on El Paseo Drive in Palm Desert. As we all know, the desert heat can cause malaise and it’s been brutal this season.  To our delight, we saw our restaurant misters blazing full of fresh air, cooling patio guests at Kitchen 86 + Bar.  Taking this visual note as a sign, we stepped in for a bite…and stayed for a cocktail.

Even with typical decreased tourism throughout the Coachella Valley in July, there was a wait for a table (another good sign) so we decided to sit at + Bar to see what, all, the buzz was about.

As we tried to decide what to order from their amazing “Modern Eclectic Small Plate” menu, we were intrigued with the colorful cocktails being served in front of us.  We began with one of our favorites, Prosecco with a serving of the Kitchen 86 Bread with wood fired garlic, extra virgin olive oil, herbs and pecorino.

drinks at Kitchen 86 palm desert

This mixologist we encountered not only poured superb drinks… he introduced our team to what seems to be the “it” summertime spirit: The Aperol Spritz.

Ultra-refreshing and light, this Italian inspired gift truly is the perfect summer beverage.   Served with equal parts Aperol, Prosecco and a splash of San Pelligrino sparkling water, it blissly bubbles as you sip in its sunshine.  The classic orange citrus garnish hints to the mandarin orange flavor of the Aperol and adds a delicious desert hue to the glass that some have liked to that of a “sunset over the Italian Riviera”. Grazie!

Speaking of good things Italian, as we enjoyed our cocktails, we found the Kitchen 86 restaurant menu to have many Italian influenced dishes infused with local and organic ingredients.  Feeling well-nourished with our starter and aperitif in hand, we moved to the outdoor patio to dine under the misters.  Sitting under the cool mist, we comfortably ordered our main courses.  We shared an, especially, tasty lasagna as well as a mouth-watering chicken pesto sandwich.

The evaporative nature of the misting system gave us a true break from the heat by decreasing the terrace’s ambient temperature, giving us a wonderful opportunity to eat while gazing upon one of the most beautiful streets in the world.  El Pawseo Drive sits within the heart of Palm Desert and features a world class hub for shopping, dining, and culture.  Art galleries as well as public art pieces dot the rue flush with posh designer boutiques, Euro-styled salons, a high-end cannabis dispensary, and a bevy of swanky gourmet experiences to entice the most distinguished epicureans.  The al fresco dining options are plenty and you can be sure to identify them easily by, of course, looking out for those misters!  Prego!

You can check out the ever-changing menu at www.kitchen-86.com . However, we suggest you don’t overlook the + Bar to bring a smile to your lips! Kitchen 86 + Bar is located at 73-130 El Paseo, Suite I, Palm Desert, California.

Behind the Scenes at Koolfog: Meet Adriana!

Koolfog has been delivering cool mist systems and developing interesting fogscape designs for over 30 years in the Coachella Valley.   We are proud of our growth and the innovative misting and fog atmospheric applications that have evolved over the years.  We are also aware of the impact our amazing employees have had on serving our Greater Palm Springs community and our desert customers.  We wouldn’t be where we are today without the Koolfog team that work hard behind the scenes and we want to give you a glimpse of these contributors that make our team shine!

Meet Adriana:

Adriana has been with Koolfog for over 13 years and has witnessed how our outdoor cooling systems and our fog systems have provided comfort and great visual effects for an international clientele.   As our human resources liaison, Adriana has been instrumental in growing our team and building our corporate culture.  She handles this responsibility with ease while, also, taking charge of Koolfog’s invoices as well as A/R and A/P accounting needs.  She administers contracts, works with our insurance requirements, and keeps our front office on track.  Adriana loves a challenge and thrives in keeping on top of her work during our fast-paced busy season.

Adriana is a desert native, born and raised in Mecca, California.  She enjoys our Coachella Valley hiking trails, the mountain scenery, and of course, our colorful desert sunsets. While she loves the weather most of the year, she appreciates the value of Koolfog’s outdoor misting and fog systems as the temperatures heat up.

Adriana is a mother of two children who she says, “inspire her to be a role model”.    She likes to take her children to the Palm Springs Art Museum followed by a trip to Crazy Mel’s restaurant.  You’ll find Adriana and her family on the outside dining area cooling off under the misters while feasting on the eateries’ delicious burgers.

The La Quinta Cliffhouse is another one of Adriana’s favorite haunts.   She loves this destination location offering al fresco dining set among the rocks where you can take in a sunset dinner while relaxing comfortably under the venue’s patio mist systems. Adriana loves the diverse menu options and the amazing seafood appetizer selections.

Adriana loves seafood, especially, shrimp ceviche. A natural cook, she uses her senses to take over the kitchen.  Typically, she usually prepares her dishes using visual and tasting cues. In sharing her favorite shrimp ceviche recipe (below), she encourages the gourmet chef within to put your own spin on it.

Adriana’s “Chill Mist” Shrimp Ceviche

2lbs – raw shrimp (peeled, deveined & chopped)

2 to 3 tomatoes (finely diced)

1 white onion (finely diced)

½ cup of cilantro (finely chopped)

¼ orange juice

Salt to taste

Black pepper (ground) to taste

2 – finely diced serrano chiles (seeded)

A lot of lemon juice (fresh lemons) enough to cover entire ingredients

*Avocado wedges for garnish.

Mixed all the above ingredients using the lemon juice to thoroughly “mist” the contents of the bowl. “Chill” in the fridge overnight. (5 – 8 hours)

Serve on a tostada and garnish with avocado wedges!

HGTV’s Desert Flippers

HGTV’s Desert Flippers

In a recent episode of HGTV’s Desert Flippers, “Go Bold or Go Home”, Koolfog plays a key role in the house’s transformation. The show follows couple Lindsey & Eric Bennett who buy and refurbish homes in the Palm Springs Desert area. “Go Bold or Go Home” features a mid-century modern home in a desirable neighborhood that needs some tweaks to live up to its full potential. As part of the reno the Bennett’s focus on the backyard of the home, as Eric notes that “people come to Palm Springs for indoor/outdoor lifestyle” so they work to increase the usable outdoor square footage and create an appealing outdoor space. However, as the couple knows, heat can be a definite problem for potential buyers if an outdoor space is not cooled properly. Koolfog to the rescue!

We don’t want to spoil the show but can say that Lindsey raved about the “huge outdoor dining area” that was made possible by the addition of the misters to “cool the outdoor living space.” Clearly, adding a misting system helped the couple reach their goal of a successful flip!
